Our Philanthropy
Transitions of PA founded by a group of women in 1975 in the Susquehanna River Valley area were either single, separated, or divorced. Each one of them came together to talk about issues and concerns related to the mistreatment of women. The organization saw that women not only required legal advice and emotional support but a place where they could find physical safety. Some of the women who belonged to Susquehanna Legal Services (SLS) found that women who lived in physically battered homes were undergoing transition moving out of their houses. The representation of female clients grew concerning the issue around domestic violence. Although changes led to the shutdown of its operation it managed to stay open because of grants and donations allowing programs and staff to continue to grow with more specialized services. From 2008 to 2012, the agency went through a name change reflecting the diverse population of people to include not only women but men and children to their service.
